How can I use extension cords safely?

Extension cords are for temporary use, and should not be used in place of fixed wiring.

Never run electrical cords under rugs, behind radiators or across or thru doorways where they can become worn, frayed and fail.

Replace any worn extension cords; do not try to mask the problem with duct tape or electrical tape.

Make sure the cord you are using is the correct length; do not plug one extension into another to make it longer. Make sure the cord is the correct size for the load; check the original package for instructions and guidelines.

How can I use household appliances safely?

Never use an electrical appliance for anything other than its intended use. Hair dryers aren’t meant to dry clothing, and ovens aren’t intended to heat your home.

Keep appliances and their cords away from water. If an appliance falls into water, don’t retrieve it until you’ve unplugged the appliance. Don’t use the particular appliance until you’ve had it inspected and repaired by a qualified technician. Water conducts electricity and any water-damaged appliance can give you a lethal electrical shock.

Never run any appliance’s electrical cord under a carpet, rug or furniture. This may cause the cord to overheat and start a fire.

Replace light bulbs only with bulbs of equal or lower wattage than that recommended by the manufacturer. Using light bulbs of higher wattage can cause the lamp to overheat and start a fire.
