Yielding Safely to Emergency Vehicles

It’s happened to most of us: You’re traveling in the family car, and from what seems like out of no-where there’s a fire truck in your rear view mirror. What happens next can be smooth and easy, or confusing and disastrous.

State Law requires motorists to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles, pull over to the RIGHT as far as possible and stop, allowing the emergency vehicle to pass.

Many time emergency vehicles travel in groups, and not necessarily from the same direction. So if you just moved out of the way for one emergency vehicle, expect to see another unit.

It’s a good idea to check your mirrors regularly, keep your radio volume down and always drive defensively. You never know, they may be responding to an emergency in your neighborhood.
