On May 7, 2013 Newtown Hook and Ladder was dispatched with automatic aid from Hawleyville Fire Department to a reported brush fire in the forest off of Sanford Road. Arriving firefighters were able to locate the fire with the assistance of passing hikers approximately one mile hike on a marked trail within the upper portion of Paugussett State Forest. Additionally, Sandy Hook Fire Department was requested for assistance with specialized brush firefighting equipment and manpower. Approximately 2 to 3 acres of forest were found to be on fire and spreading due to dry conditions. Firefighting crews created a perimeter around the fire and extinguished the fire just as it was getting dark. State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection dispatched a forest fire fighting crew for complete overhaul and the investigation with the assistance of Newtown PD and Newtown Fire Marshal’s office is ongoing. Hook and Ladder and other town fire departments operated on the scene for just over five hours.
